Pompeii is the only archaeological site in the world able to show the appearance o fan entire ancient Roman city. Rich of traffic and pulsating with life, the city was crystallized by the famous eruption of AD 79, during which a rain of ash and lapillus enveloping everything: houses, people, roads, public buildings and objects of everyday life. Everything was as “locked” in a terrible instant. With an extent of about 66 hectares of which 50 dug in the ground (suburban areas included), Pompeii represent a unique heritage of architectures, sculptures paintings and mosaics. The ash that buried the city after Vesuvio's eruption in 79 a.C. allowed an exceptional preservation of the Roman city in its magnificent wholeness.

Scavi di Pompei Via Villa dei Misteri 1, 80045, Pompei (Naples) OPENING HOURS: November to March: 8:30am to 5pm (last entrance at 3.30pm) April to October: 8:30am to 7:30pm (last entrance at 6 pm) INFORMATION about access for visitors with limited mobility and disabilities: People with motor difficulties and heart diseases should be especially careful. People with motor difficulties are advised to enter from Piazza Anfiteatro and to limit the visit to the surroundings of the Amphitheatre. Reservations must be made with a minimum of 1-day notice. IMPORTANT – Code of Conduct Take extra care while moving, do not stop on the eyelashes or climb on the walls of the excavation Observe the limitations of entry and access Be respectful. Refrain from shouting, writing on the walls and dispersing waste rather than place them in the appropriate containers Photos, films and TV films are authorized for private use only. Please contact the Office of the Superintendent for shooting with tripod, using flash and artificial light, as well as for commercial or different uses. Please leave bags, backpacks, umbrellas and other bulky items in the wardrobe Do not smoke Pets are not allowed We point out the possible presence of stray dogs, which have passed the perimeter defenses of the excavations. We recommend to stay away and pay attention. We recommend the use of shoes with low heels. There is an equipped area for picnics near Porta Nola.
