The Barberini family was certainly one of the most powerful and famous in Rome during the 17th century. Originally from Tuscany, where they built their wealth by trading fabrics, they moved to Rome and began a rapid social ascent, and commissioned some of the major artists of the time - Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Francesco Borromini and Pietro da Cortona - the construction of palaces, churches and fountains that helped change the face of the city at that time.
